Welcome to ¡Viva La Mainstream!

Hey there,

Welcome to version 2.0 of ¡Viva La Mainstream! If you’ve been familiar with VLM for awhile, you know we started out on Blogger, till they got all uppity about the whole posting mp3s and nonsense. So after much cursing, muttering under my breath and a few things thrown at the wall, I decided the logical course of action was to jump ship and migrate to a new site. Hence, the new site here on WordPress. If you’ve never heard of VLM before this paragraph, read onward to see what you’ve come across.

I’ve been a music geek since sometime in high school. I’ve been writing things (all kinds of things) since before that. One day during my freshman year of college, my girlfriend told me I needed to get a hobby. Realizing that music was a passion of mine and having been told that writing was a talent of mine, I decided to combine the two and start a blog. The process was a pain in the ass for the first year or so. I was making everything up as I went, and it was all terribly inconsistent. As I wandered about the other music blogs on the web, I realized very few people were talking about the music I liked, and when they were, they were bashing it for being mainstream radio friendly garbage. These blogs had a way of thinking that I should be giving my undivided attention to esoteric, pretentious indie bands that I had no emotional investment in. I was frustrated and needed to tell people about it. And lo, suddenly VLM had a purpose.

¡Viva La Mainstream! is dedicated to giving a voice to the supposedly mindless corporate music that the average Joe might already know about, but yet can’t find anyone else taking seriously on the internet. Pretty much everything is fair game ’round here, but like everyone else I have opinions and strong likes and dislikes, and you’ll hear about them. For example, the Foo Fighters are gods among men. Likewise, Feist puts me to sleep. I invite encourage anyone who comes across this site and has something to say about what I say to do so. I may not always agree with you, but I’ll sure as hell let you have your opinions and won’t begrudge you the chance to tell me I’m full of crap (here’s a secret: every blogger is to some degree).

So go forth, and read the blog if you wish. If you truly love what you see, bookmark me, find me on the Hype Machine, and for God’s sake, keep coming back!

Thanks for checking in,

==TJ==

  2. Great blog -
    I was wondering if you’d post something from a new favorite of mine – Schuyler Fisk.
    You’d probably best recognize her as an actress – she was in Orange County (that movie with Colin Hanks and Jack Black, she’s the girlfriend) she’s been in other films as well, but she really shines as a musician. I know there have been a lot of these actor to musician crossovers – the only difference is shes actually got talent (not to say there aren’t exceptions to the rule, e.g. Zooey Deschanel) She’s got a good voice and something to say (which is why I like her). Lately there’s been this trend of disingenuous, turgid and frankly, shitty singer/songwriters and I think she kind of stands of out from the pack, she gives the genre some hope.
    She’s cool and hot and I’m a fan. Just trying to spread the good word around – give the stuff a listen if you please – I attached a song and some pics. Check out her myspace page too – http://www.myspace.com/schuylerfisk.

    Thanks mucho,

    Leo

  7. How about Viva la (someday) mainstream? I am in a hip-hop group called the DownBeat Keys. Our sound is very accessible, but we’re not signed yet. I think you might like it. We use all live instruments and have two rappers and a singer. Check out our single “I Don’t Remember” on myspace or youtube.
    Thanks,
    Andrew

  9. I love cake. All albums are amazing, but I’d have to say Prolonging is the dearest to me. If you get a chance ,check out our tunes. There are some “cakish” qualities in them. You can use this link to download for free.

  10. TJ!!! You are a brave pioneer in the era of douchebag hipster blog snobbery. Band like mine NEED writers like you. We like to think of ourselves as somewhere between Foo Fighters and heavier Jimmy Eat World. We just finished our debut EP, Through the Mojo Wire, and we would love if you would give it a listen.

    We are based out of Brooklyn, NYC, and we pre-sold out our record release show in Manhattan at Mercury Lounge. We also are huge fans of Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. We are filming a music video for our song “In the Air (Revival)” with a producer from MTV in early November. Cheers, and keep up the good work!
