Two years after Fall Out Boy released their last(final?) hit single, lead singer Patrick Stump has released two versions of the first single from his solo album, currently slated for a February 2011 release. Stump’s official website currently holds two versions of “Spotlight”, one subtitled “New Regrets” and the other “Oh Nostalgia”. The site offers free mp3s of both tracks (after jumping through multiple hoops on Facebook) and an opportunity for fans to vote on which they prefer. Listen to both versions of the song below.

Patrick Stump – Spotlight (Oh Nostalgia)
Honestly, I’m not sure which one I prefer, because I’m not really sold on either. I think it’s going to take awhile to swallow the sound of Patrick Stump minus his guylinered comrades. But there’s something good to be found in both versions of “Spotlight”. The (New Regrets) version is immediately bouncier and probably more accessible to both FOB fans and club denizens. I miss Wentz harmonizing behind him, but if Stump is shooting for a hit single, this would be the version to release.
But the (Oh Nostalgia) version is a bit more dynamic, and shows off a different vocal side from what most listeners are used to hearing from Stump. If there was a way to transplant the percussion from this track and adapt it to the former cut, it might be the ideal version. But with a gun to my head, I think I choose the (New Regrets) version.
What say the readers? Which version is better? And how do you feel in general about Stump’s solo album (or any of the side projects that have sprung since FOB’s dissolving)? Go forth and comment!

I was expecting SO much more from him … I’m all about vocals, but I’m going to have to go with New Regrets this time. Hopefully the rest of this album isn’t so .. “lukewarm” as this song. =/
