Artist: Tegan and Sara
Album: So Jealous
Release Date: September 14, 2004
I listened to Tegan and Sara in the first place awhile back as a result of my circle of die-hard music nerd friends, who cite the duo as a perpetual favorite. I listened to The Con a few months ago as part of this series and I liked it well enough, but friend and devout T&S fan Alisa was shocked and horrified to learn that I had yet to hear So Jealous, one of the albums she swears she’d take with her on a desert island. So tonight I changed that.
I get what the appeal is. Simple, unassuming pop that doesn’t pander to the unintelligent but also…you know…pops. It doesn’t have the urgent big-and-loud “MUST DANCE NOW!!!” problem that most mainstream pop has (looking at you, Lady Gaga), but it also isn’t “too indie” to have catchy choruses and charming hooks that pull the listener in. It takes a bit of work to listen to, and one time through the record only really scratches the surface (which is why I’m going back for more in the coming days), but So Jealous is a refreshing taste of pop music that has more meat to it than Top 40 can handle.

I’d recommend their album that preceded this one as well — ‘If It Was You’. Their first two albums are probably too Ani Difranco for people who like them for ‘So Jealous’ and ‘The Con’.
