Album A Day: The Raconteurs – Broken Boy Soldiers

Artist: The Raconteurs
Album: Broken Boy Soldiers
Release Date: May 16, 2006

Usually a side project is a mechanism for an artist to expand his own ego by taking the lead on another project. But leave it to Jack White to turn the norm on its head. With The Raconteurs, Jack White primarily serves as lead guitarist, only taking to the mic occasionally. As a result, you really and truly do get a sound that couldn’t be much more different from that of The White Stripes. With a full band alongside White, The Raconteurs and the songs of Broken Boy Soldiers sound far more complete and fleshed out than the bare-bones rock of The White Stripes. The downside of that fact is that The Raconteurs aren’t nearly as memorable on first listen, but there’s more than enough melody and interesting rhythms and hooks here to warrant an extra listen or two.

  1. Broken Boy Soldiers is a mind blowing album in my opinion and The Raconteurs are an incredible live band that I’ve had the privilege of seeing twice and would highly recommend if the opportunity ever arises again.
