Album A Day: The Police – Outlandos d’Amour

Artist: The Police
Album: Outlandos d’Amour
Release Date: November 2, 1978

A friend and I were talking not too long ago, and we agreed that The Police had to be one of the tightest, most exciting bands to come out of the late-’70s, and for that matter even amongst the band’s of my generation. When they kicked it up a notch, The Police were positively electrifying; a frenetic, explosive brand of post-punk that sounded so natural and so spur-of-the-moment that each moment begged for another. And when the band tried for a slower, more measured approach, it still keeps you on the edge of your seat. Outlandos d’Amour is a fantastic first impression to a band that grew so big and so fast and never settled for what was easy or expected that they became damn near legendary overnight.

My friends and I have kept a running list of bands we either want to see, or bands for whom we’d steal a time machine to see. The Police are consistently on every iteration of that list that I make. Listening to Outlandos d’Amour now only solidifies that.
