Album A Day: Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young – Déjà Vu

Artist: Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young
Album: Déjà Vu
Release Date: March 11, 1970

My knowledge of the music of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young (and various iterations thereof) is largely restricted to the music of this album. Listening to it now, it strikes me as a notch and a half above The Eagles. I like Don Henley & Co., but CSNY are a far more musically adept; they have David Crosby and Neil Young, for frak’s sake. The acoustic melodies and phrasing, plus the quartet’s absolutely soaring harmonies make the “Hotel California” gang sound like the 5th grade Christmas concert. Additionally, the group’s poetry and lyrics (the two are essentially the same in this case) are nearly umatched by anyone else performing at the time (except maybe Bob Dylan. Maybe.). To make a long story short, Deja Vu is something of a misnomer, since in all likelihood you haven’t heard something like this before.
