Album A Day: Godsmack – The Other Side EP

Artist: Godsmack
Album: The Other Side EP
Release Date: March 16, 2004

Think what you want about Godsmack. Say that they’re a holdover from the rather unfortunate nu-metal subgenre that also spawned Limp Bizkit and Saliva and countless other bands that have long been forgotten (anyone remember Adema?). Say they’re over commercialized radio fodder, rehashing things that other bands before them did significantly better. You’d be accurate on all those counts. But don’t say they don’t have balls. The Other Side EP demonstrates that much.

Releasing a purely acoustic album takes guts, especially when you made your career as a hard rock band. Yes, I’m sure it was done before Godsmack released The Other Side, but it was still gutsy. It basically acted as a response to critics who slammed Godsmack for being one-dimensional, for only having one volume setting (loud), and not enjoying themselves. Godsmack sound like they’re having a pretty good time on this album, exploring the quieter crevices of some fan favorites. The acoustic venture was fleeting, as Godsmack went straight back to the growling crunch on their next album, but showing what they could do when so moved was a powerful statement from a band who’s fought to stay relevant for most of this decade.
