I’m trying to come up with a good excuse for why One of the Boys continues to take up valuable hard drive space on my laptop. The only justifiable reason I’ve got is the fact that I was holding on it for an eventual Album A Day appearance. Seriously. Katy Perry’s pop debut (the oft-bootlegged Christian album is best saved for another day) has so little socially redeeming value that it kind of hurts. Sure, the album is brimming with sugary pop hits with choruses as infectious as herpes and beats that smack you upside the head repeatedly. Its these qualities that has made Perry an unstoppable force on the charts. But let’s face it; “I Kissed A Girl” has all the creative substance of a speck of dust. Perry’s vocal abilities are on a good day serviceable, and on songs like “Lost” flat out disgusting.
Usually this is the part where I tell you the overall good thing you can take away from this record. On One of the Boys there really isn’t one. All of the good you get from this record can be obtained on far better albums with significantly less headache attached to it. Let it be known that after finishing this listen, I’m deleting this album, save for its singles, which I will keep for future historical value, as miniscule as it may be.
