Clearing Out The Inbox

With spring break a mere 12 hours away for me, and thus a week for me to unwind, chill out, and find a job for the summer on the horizon, I figured now is a good time to take a look at some of the music I get sent by all manner of people. How those two things are connected…well, I don’t really know. You decide.

Before getting to that though, I want to send mad props to reader chubbles, who kindly informed me that local Philly band Familiar 48 (whom I covered on an Album A Day back in January) had not broken up as I had reported. Lead singer Jayy Mannon is still performing under the name Bonehead, the original name for Familiar 48. They have some new music for sale on his website, but I didn’t get a chance to hear much of it. At any rate, thanks to chubbles for the good news!

It seems more and more like I’m the only blogger on the web defending Chris Cornell’s Scream. Earlier this week Idolator devoted several posts to trashing the project, and Trent Reznor (of Nine Inch Nails) posted a rather scathing Twitter on the subject. With all due respect to Trent, haters be full of shit. Scream has cooled off a little bit since I reviewed it, but I still like it far more than I dislike it, and this remix of “Part of Me” that’s been floating around the blogs for awhile (as well as my email inbox) only helps the matter in my view.

Next up we’ve got Doublethink. Doublethink are a  rock band from Connecticut who take the danceable rock sound that Kings of Leon have risen to fame on and the sweeping arena bombast of folks like The Killers and meshed them together to create a strangely unique, adrenaline-pumping sound. If you like “You Think We’re In Love” below, be sure to hit up their website and get a free copy of “California Doll”. Both tracks are on their just-released EP, Seeing Red.

Wrapping things up for now is The Ready Set. The Ready Set are a poppy, pixy-stick fueled dance band in the vein of Hellogoodbye. But whereas Hellogoodbye are the unbelievably hot but criminally vapid and braindead cheerleader, The Ready Set are more like the subtly attractive, nuanced girl in the marching band (no offense to any readers who might’ve been cheerleaders, it’s just a metaphor and I was a band geek). The Ready Set have more to their sound than sugarcoated synths and juvenile lyrics that make little sense. They have interesting and complex rhythms and lyrics that probably took more than 45 minutes to write. Check out “The Scientist” below, and go lend eardrums to their new album.
