My original plan for today was to do the Deluxe Version of Bleed American released last year, but I woke up late and have plans at 3, so that kinda got shot down. Instead, I give you the most recent studio set from Jimmy Eat World, the criminally underappreciated Chase This Light.
It’s been a year and a half since Chase This Light came out, and any time I hear any song from the album, I stop to ponder the baffling question of why this record wasn’t bigger than it was. This is without a doubt the best work Jimmy Eat World has done. It’s got the catchiness and shine of their breakthrough Bleed American, and the emotional content and earnest of their emo days in Clarity. But after scoring a modest hit in “Big Casino” and a fizzler in “Always Be” the album fell off the radar. On an eleven-track CD, there were at least seven potential singles in my view. I’m not saying they should have pulled a Nickelback and dropped half the album as a single, but quitting after one flopped single is equally senseless. I don’t know if this is attributable to a record label that wants to re-create the success of “The Middle” or what, but this album had a chance to be the biggest artistic and musical success of their career, but I suppose getting one of the two is just as great.
